This is a detailed image of the afterglow of the big bang as taken by the Planck satellite. The afterglow comes from every direction in the sky with the blue color corresponding to cooler regions and the red corresponding to hotter regions. Much of our understanding of the composition and evolution of the universe comes from this image.
